Looking for a way to enhance your eyes without adding 15 minutes to your daily make-up routine? We put a few different mascara techniques to the test to see what impact they would have on our lashes. For each of the tree tests, we used Benefit’s brand new BADgal BANG! Volumising Mascara. (Psst… there’s a fun-size tube in every March Birchbox!) It’s volumising, lengthening, and lightweight (thanks to a very cool technology that uses aero-particles) and definitely sets lashes up for success. For a baseline, here’s what US staffer Lorelei’s lashes look like bare (on the left), and with one coat of BADgal (on the right).

Test #1: Lash Primer and Volumising Mascara
To kick off the tests, we tried a product that claims to instantly add volume and length to lashes and also give long-term conditioning benefits: a lash primer. We’re big fans of Benefit’s They’re Real! Tinted Lash Primer under mascara in the past but have never tested it out head to head with mascara alone. Will the extra step be worth it?
Apply one coat of the tinted lash primer before two coats of BADgal BANG!
The Result:
Fabulous! We were pleasantly surprised that we were able to tell a difference when adding a primer. Lorelei’s lashes looked slightly fuller without any clumps and it added a totally manageable short step to her routine.

Test #2: The Pinterest Mascara Hack
For the second test, we looked to Pinterest – the ultimate source for beauty hack inspiration. We had seen the idea of layering powder on lashes before mascara to give some extra volume but never actually tried it. Is it something anyone would ever do on a regular basis? Who knows!
Apply one light coat of BADgal BANG! before dipping a clean mascara wand in translucent powder and swiping over lashes. Cover with another coat of BADgal BANG!
The Result:
This was trickier to execute than we anticipated. First, it was hard getting powder to stick to the clean mascara wand. Then, applying the powder to the lashes without it getting everywhere also proved to be quite difficult. In the end, we didn’t see enough of a difference in my lashes to warrant the time I invested.

Test #3: False Lashes
Last up, we pulled out the big guns: false lashes! We knew that wearing fake lashes was going to instantly make Lorelei’s lashes look longer, but the real test was whether they could realistically pass for natural lashes (but better), and if they could be applied without adding a ton of time to her routine.
Apply one coat of BADgal BANG! before applying your chosen lashes. Tip – go for a light and natural style if you want them to be wearable and daytime-appropriate.
The Result:
These babies clearly delivered on volume and length while still looking fairly natural. However, while we loved the results, there’s no doubt that falsies are difficult to apply and definitely added a good five minutes to your make-up routine. We’d consider them for a special occasion but, meanwhile, Benefit’s BADgal BANG! Volumising Mascara does the trick!
